Madballs in… Babo: Invasion -REVIEW (PC/XBL)

PlayBrains gave us an opportunity to evaluate their Madballs in… Babo: Invasion game for PC while it was in its beta phase. The game has already been out for awhile on XBLA, so some of you may already be playing this decent action shooter. The characters in this game are based on the Madballs toy line that you may remember from the 80s.  The gameplay centers around you navigating your way around maps as a Madball, laying mass destruction upon the enemies in typical shooter fashion. With easy to grasp controls and two different viewpoints which you can switch between, you should be able to find yourself comfortable with the action in a very short period of time.

The good

A lot of what I have to say about this game is based on its price point. At $9.99 USD on Steam, it’s hard to pass up trying different games like this to see if it’s your thing. The graphics are not ground breaking but they suit the game well, and the sound is fine also. The multiplayer action in the game is very satisfying and works well and easily extends the amount of time you’ll want to spend playing.

The bad

The game starts to feel repetitive to me very quickly, particularly the single player campaign. There is a story there, but it doesn’t have any incredible hooks to keep you in, and the levels start to blend together fairly quickly. Although there are achievement/unlocks to get you new Madball characters and weapons, I found myself comfortable using the originally available weapons and not interested enough to replay levels after unlocking others.

Here’s the deal

I’m riding the fence on this one – if you’ve got friends who are into the multiplayer or particularly dig the multiplayer action available in this Madballs game, then it is easily worth the $10. As I said earlier, sometimes it is hard to say no to $10 to see what a game is like. If you’re very choosy about which games you spend your money on or the genre is not your favorite, I would say you’ll probably want to give Madballs in… Babo: Invasion a pass. Mark D. 7/10
